Carmine, TX to Richards, TX
We are now in the south! Hot, humid, and lots of mosquitos last night! Same this morning as we prepared to leave. Pedals down at 0755, under overcast/foggy skies. It was warm and humid right out of the gate. We have a long day ahead of us, so we didn't push it too hard. For quite a while, Tom R., Joe, Eileen, and I rode somewhat together, at last until Independence, where we all stopped for a break at a country store that looked like the Alamo.
Baylor University started out in Independence in the late 1800s, before it moved to Waco. Quite the history in this little town, including Sam Houston's home.
Tom and Joe left us in Independence, where we had about 35 miles of riding left. Ken then caught up with us, and rode with Eileen and I to Navasota, where we stopped at Millers ice cream shop for a brreak. I first had a milkshake, then a root beer float, and finished up with a 16oz Squirt. Twenty more miles to go.
My eye started acting up again, and I rode the last ten miles with one eye closed. It was not pleasant, and the heat/humidity did not help. Finally made it to Mexican Hill Ranch in Richards, where I was finally able to relax, shower, and eat dinner, provided by former Southern Tier riders who live nearby.
