Comstock, TX to Brackettville, TX
So happy to be in a hotel, as it rained last night, along with high winds. Had to take some photos of the signs in the hotel room. They are very picky about cleaning fish and gear!
On the road about 0800, and made it to Del Rio, 30+ miles away, in less than two hours. The road was smooth, and the wind was at my back. We were supposed to meet up for lunch, but the chosen restaurant was closed, so I ate with a few others at IHOP. It was a cold and blustery day, so it was good to get indoors where it was warm.
On the second leg of the day, I passed by the main gate of Laughlin AFB, five miles outside of Del Rio. US 90 is a rough road, as evidenced by the photo below. The chips in the chip seal are Texas sized! Thirty more miles to Brackettville and our quarters for the night at Fort Clark Springs.
Along the way from Comstock to Brackettville were several historical markers. A couple of them are included in the photos. The geography changes were very distinct as I rode from the Chihuahuan desert into the plains of Texas. There are trees again, after several weeks without roadside shade!
Lastly, we have ridden US 90 for almost 350 miles. For over 300 miles, there is a dirt road on the side of the highway, with sets of tires strategically placed for dragging by the Border Patrol. They drag the tires with their 4wd trucks to smooth out any tracks, the. They look for footprints crossing the road. When they find the prints, the Border Patrol officers then track the illegals on foot, upwards of five to ten miles through the brush. We spoke with several officers, and asked what happens when they catch the individuals. The answer: "They go before the judge, and then they do time."
