Austin, TX to Bastrop, TX
Sad to leave Austin, but good to get on the road again. Left the Hostel at 0920 with Tom R. and Joe, and rode through urban, industrial, and farmland areas. Joe soon broke away, and left Tom and I in the dust. Not bad for a 70 year old!
Tom and I rode the mostly flat ride through ranches and farms, stopping for lunch in Cedar Springs. Both of us almost fell asleep after eating - so relaxed! Onward to Bastrop, where I told Tom to go ahead, and I stayed in town to check out the historic downtown area. I needed a beard trim, so I stopped into a barber shop straight out of Mayberry. Y'all remember Mayberry RFD, right? Anyway, the barber trimmed my beard, then it was time for the shave. He invited me to step into the back room, and sit in the far chair. Once he placed the hot towel round my neck and covered my face, visions of Sweeney Todd danced through my head. I knew that this would be it! He was going to slit my throat, and send me down the chute! He repeated the towel treatment two more times, then the shave cream, then the razor. More towel treatment, lotions, peppermint, cool towel, and finally, we were done. No chute, no blood! Then he washed my hair at no extra charge. He was a very nice older barber, and I made sure he was well compensated for not giving me the Sweeney Todd treatment. No, I did not mention it to him! Wow, the beard and shave feels really nice. Too bad Dianne is not here to enjoy it!
I felt so good that I stopped into the Colorado River Winery tasting room, just around the corner. Unfortunately, Texas wine does not compare to California wine.
It was getting late, so off to the state park campground, just a few miles away. When I arrived, I was told we were eating out again, right outside the park at the Roadhouse. While I was looking forward to the camp food, it was nice not to have to cook and clean.
