Started today from the Ma-Tar-Awa campground n Alpine. Everyone sort of left when they were ready, instead of as a group. That was okay - I started with two others, leaving only our leader, Ken, and the only twenty-something guy fresh out of college, Eric. We soon passed others, especially the group that stopped at the restaurant in Descanso for a second breakfast. Lots more climbing today, including a long 6 mile climb on I-8. Overall, not as bad as yesterday, as today's climbing was spread over the whole day, whereas yesterday's was all at the end.
It was my turn to shop and cook today, so once I got to the Highland East RV Park, I had to quickly set up my tent, empty my panniers, and go back up the road to a small, backwoods country store for groceries, then back again to the RV Park. Otherwise, it would have only been 34.7 miles with ,411 feet of ascent. Diner - raving reviews! Apparently, while I was off grocery shopping, there were some concerns expressed about previous meals not having enough protein. Guess what? The backwoods country market did not have any meat, so we came back with no protein! Fortunately, Eileen took off on her bicker shortly thereafter to another mini-mart in town, and brought back some frozen ground beef. That is why dinner was such a hit. Rigatoni with tomato sauce, onions, zucchini, diced tomatos, and... ground beef, with a large salad. So much for my culinary skills!
Tomorrow we expect less than 800 feet of climbing, all at the beginning. After a nice 7 mile descent on I-8, it will be flat to our next stop in Bradley, past El Centro.
Not many photos today:
