Neal and I got up early to set out our breakfast and lunch for the day. Our typical breakfast consists of cereal and milk, or granola, yogurt, and fruit. We added some orange juice for today. Breakfast was set up in Neal and Joe's room, which was adjacent to my room. No coffee this morning, as the person who had the pots was out visiting friends for our Tempe layover. Lunch was set up in Eric's and my room, although Eric was still sleeping. Typical lunch consists of PB&J or lunch eat sandwiches, bananas, oranges, and fig newtons or Oreos. Everyone prepares their own lunch, and then the "cooks" clean up and ensure that Alan the group gear and leftover food is appropriately divided up and carried forward by the group.
Eileen and I left Motel 6 at 0900, we had a short stop at Target, and kept riding through Tempe and Mesa for about 20 miles. Pretty flat and straight ride, with a gradual climb of less than 1%. We stopped at the Golden Spoon for frozen yogurt, and received 50% off for a veteran's discount. What a treat for a hot ride! Left the Golden Spoon, and rode six more miles to the Usery Mountain Park campground. The climbing intensified for these last few miles, giving us a taste of what is to come tomorrow!
The view looking out over my tent.
Dinner tonight was provided by the Los Gringos Locos Grill and Cantina. What a wonderful treat of chips and salsa, fajitas, watermelon, churro, and n aigloo full of margaritas on the rocks! To make it even more special, it was free. As it turns out, the manager and her husband are bicyclists, and are looking to do a tour such as this one. They looked it up on the internet, and found that Ken was leading a group through this area. They contacted Ken, and wanted to provide this meal for the group. Much appreciation to Deborah Nine and Los Gringos Locos in Apache Junction. (Our route does not go through Apache Junction, but they wanted to cater our meal anyway).
