Day 13 - September 22, 2017 - 66.8 miles, 5214 feet ascent

Whew!   Long day in the saddle!  9.5 hours on the road, with several breaks, including a long break toward the end at Jakes Corner.  Left the campground at 0639, and arrived at the Tonto Basin Inn at about 1622.  We climbed from almost flat desert to mountains, and descended again.  There was almost as much descent as ascent, which makes it all worth while.

Today was the most scenic day so far.  I saw about 20 wheel balance weights, and at least half a dozen broken tie down straps.   Seriously, though, the mountain deserts were quite a sight, although on the descents, I kept my eyes glued to the road!

Leaving Maricopa County, we crossed into Gila County.  Did you know that the Gila River is a t obituary of the Colorado River?  I learned that on our RV trip earlier this year.  The Gila and Colorado meet near Yuma.

Four cyclists taking a well deserved break.  Left to right - me, Erwin, Eric, and Neal.

Jake's Corner was the only store or service of any kind on today's ride, 53 miles into the ride.  Good things no I was well stocked with water, fig newtons, and a pastrami sandwich!  Four of us pulled into the store almost simultaneously - Ed, Erwin, Eileen, and Eric.  How ironic that all the "E's" pulled in together.  Several minutes later, our numbers increased to eight people taking a break at th store, the last eight riders of 12 on the road today.

Unfortunately, Terry did not start today's ride with us, as he was having some health issues with his eyes.  Turns out he acquired a condition similar to snowblindness, and now must remain indoors for 10 days, and wear sunglasses even indoors for a while.  We will all miss Terry from Moab!

Hamburgers, salad, potato salad, and col slaw were on the menu for dinner tonight, followed by banana splits.  Great job to Erwin and Eric for shopping and cooking.  Can't wait for breakfast - pancakes and ice cream!
